Press Release from the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, February 10, 2006

Informal ministers meeting in Copenhagen on maritime policy in Europe

On Friday 10 February 2006 Mr Bendt Bendtsen, Danish minister for Economic and Business Affairs, hosted an informal ministers meeting on maritime policy for ministers responsible for maritime transport. Representatives from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom participated.

The focus point of the meeting was current international and regional maritime policy issues and the ministers exchanged views on a future European Maritime Policy, environmental aspects of shipping and how to ensure the competitiveness for quality operators in the global market.

The ministers welcomed the Commissions initiative in proposing, through a Green Paper, a broadly founded approach to a future European policy on the seas and oceans that will integrate shipping and the whole maritime cluster with other environmental, social and economic considerations. They affirmed their countries intention to take a leading role in the further process.

When discussing EU legislative proposals, there was general understanding that they should enhance the global competitiveness of European shipping industries and so in principle be based on international rules.

The meeting showed that national shipping policies in the participating states are based on common principles. The ministers agreed that there was a need for ensuring a level playing field and competitiveness for quality operators in a global world and stressed the increasing need for enforcement and strict implementation of international and EU legislation to improve the safety standards of ships and the prevention of maritime pollution. Furthermore, the Ministers emphasized the need for rapid and widespread ratifications of existing international conventions.

The Ministers noted that the realisation of current and proposed air quality targets may be challenging for several states. In this respect, the Ministers called for development and implementation of stricter international emission standards for ships, in order to exploit fully the potential contribution of shipping to sustainable mobility.

The Ministers affirmed their intention to pursue close co-operation between states that have a common interest in promoting quality shipping and sustainable shipping and ensuring growth in the European maritime sector.
